Portofino
Italyâs most famous little harbour
Portofino needs no introduction: a small harbour ringed by pastel houses, with yachts and fishing boats side by side. Yes, itâs famous and it can feel touristy, but thereâs a reason people have fallen for it for generations.
Getting there: take the train to Santa Margherita Ligure (~35â40 minutes from Genova), then bus 782 (single ticket âŹ5) or the ferry (~15 minutes, a lovely crossing). Portofino has no station of its own.
Donât stop at the piazzetta. Climb to the church of San Giorgio and then to Castello Brown (âŹ5, about a ten-minute walk up), with its gardens and a sweeping view over the harbour. Another ten minutes brings you to the Faro (lighthouse) on the point: you canât go inside, as itâs still working, but the path and the view are worth the walk.

Nearby is San Fruttuoso, with its abbey in a bay reachable by sea, and the Christ of the Abyss, the bronze statue submerged in the water since 1954.
One honest note: Portofino is expensive. A coffee in the piazzetta costs a lot and restaurants start high. Our advice: have lunch in Santa Margherita, quieter and with excellent food, and come to Portofino for the walk and the views.
